Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 149: Howard's homer wins game (75-74)

Charlie Manuel managed his bullpen very well Wednesday night, which kept the Phillies within one run of the Mets heading into the 9th inning. Rookie left-handed reliever Josh Edgin was used in the 9th inning to save the 2-1 lead for the Mets, but he walked Chase Utley with two outs before allowing a 2-run bomb to Ryan Howard. Even after this home run (and the grand slam he hit last night off Edgin), Howard is only hitting .179/.222/.381 against left-handed pitching this season, so I would be lying to you if I said I agreed with Manuel's decision to allow Howard to hit in this situation. With rookie right-handed power hitter Darin Ruf available, it seems that he would be the better choice (even Nate Schierholtz is a better lefty-lefty option than Howard). Alas, Manuel keeps sending Howard to the plate against lefties, so it was good to see that when it finally paid off, it was in an important spot.
