Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 14: Papelbon used in 3-run lead (7-7)

Friday night the Phils pulled to .500 behind 6 strong innings from Cole Hamels, and 1 IP each from Joe Contreras, Chad Qualls, and Jonathan Papelbon to win the game 4-1.

Manuel continued to use the inefficient lineup with Juan Pierre and Placido Polanco at 1-2, but the Phils' pitching came through for the win.

Only one complaint for Manuel -- I would not have used Papelbon in the 9th inning. It was a 3-run lead against one of the worst offenses in the league, and Papelbon had pitched the night before. When Papelbon isn't used in tie games on the road but then appears in games with 3+ run leads, then it's clear the bullpen management is wrong.
