Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 93: Phils, Hamels demolished by Mets (58-35)

The Phils lost the middle game in New York on Saturday afternoon by a score of 11-2.

Manuel didn't mismanage the bullpen; he used Baez, Herndon and Carpenter to finish the game after Hamels left in the 5th inning.

The lineup, as always, wasn't perfect. John Mayberry batted second (instead of Wilson Valdez, who batted 8th), which is better than 8th, where Manuel has placed him lately. However, Manuel only batted Mayberry 2nd because they were facing a left-handed pitcher; Mayberry was back in the 8-slot on Sunday (and Monday).

It would be better to bat Mayberry third and Utley second, however. It puts a right-handed bat in the middle of Utley-Howard in order to defend against LOOGYs out of the bullpen, and it puts Utley in the 2-slot, where he belongs. The 2-slot, contrary to popular opinion, is a more important batting position than the 3-slot. The lineup would improve slightly in the early innings if Mayberry batted third, and the other teams' lefty relievers would be less effective in the late innings.

When Victorino is activated, he should probably be batting third as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the lineup optimization thinking that says that the 2-hole is more important than the 3-hole says so because it was compiled using data from recent times in which it became vogue for managers to put lesser hitters (those with a lower OBP, but who "make good outs" like Martinez) in the 2-hole. Therefore, the 3-hole has become devalued because the 2-hole hitter is not on base enough. However, if you put your best hitter or OBP guy in the 2-hole, won't that increase the importance of the 3-hole?
