Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 47: Phillies offense not inept (29-18)

In a game where the Phillies did not have Wilson Valdez or Michael Martinez batting second, they somehow managed to score 9 runs off starter Bronson Arroyo.

Charlie Manuel did a few things right yesterday: he let Ruiz bat 6th (which still might be too low in the order); he didn't stack 3 consecutive lefties in the order (Utley was 2nd, Polanco was 3rd); and he yanked Cole Hamels after 6 innings and a 10-3 lead.

One slight problem with last night's lineup. John mayberry batted 8th while Domonic Brown batted 7th. There's virtually no difference between the 7 and 8 slots. However, the 4-5 hitters were both lefties, which meant Brown was the third lefty in the lineup out of four. It would have been better to put Mayberry 7th and Brown 8th for late-inning purposes.

Tonight the Phils try to earn at least a series split when Vance Worley faces RHP Johnny Cueto at 7:05 pm.
