Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 8: Carlos Ruiz demolishes the Braves, Manuel outmanages Fredi (6-2)

The Phils won the second game of the series yesterday by a 10-2 score, although it was a much closer game most of the way.

Charlie Manuel did a great job of managing his bench in this one. The score was 3-2 in the top of the 7th when Raul Ibanez led off with a double off starter Brandon Beachy, a righty.. The Braves then brought in lefty George Sherrill to face Brian Schneider, who is awful against lefties (Why would Fredi Gonzalez leave Beachy in for Ibanez, then remove him for a lefty after one runner reaches base? Just a terrible move by Gonzalez). Manuel then removed Schneider for John Mayberry Jr, who is significantly better against LHP than righties. Mayberry singled, then Sherrill walked Wilson Valdez. The pitcher's spot was due up, and Schneider was already gone, so the only possible bench player to use was Carlos Ruiz. Gonzalez removed the lefty for Scott Linebrink, who threw an awful 0-2 fastball to Ruiz, who demolished it for a grand slam. Game over.

If Manuel continues to outmanage Gonzalez like this, the Braves don't have much of a shot at this division.
