Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 19: The Padres are still brutal (13-6)

The Phils offense was quiet for the second straight night, but Cole Hamels shut down the Padres offense over 8 innings of zero-run ball. Charlie Manuel clearly doesn't trust his bullpen: he let Hamels start the 8th inning with over 100 pitches, and he ended up throwing 126 for the whole game. The final was 2-0, thanks to a "belly-whomper triple" from Ryan Howard.

I think it was the right decision. Jose Contreras threw almost 30 pitches last night and was proabbly unavailable, and with Ryan Madson essentially locked into the closer's role, Manuel wanted Hamels to do everything he could to get through 8 innings. The strategy worked. Madson picthed a dominating 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the save.

The Padres have scored 0 runs in the first 18 innings of this series, and the Phils are still undefeated in road series this year.

No complaints for Manuel tonight; Hamels made it easy on him.

Tomorrow night the Phils look to win the series as Big Joe Blanton faces RHP Tim Stauffer at 8:35pm.
