Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Phillies manage to downgrade from Eric Bruntlett

Today the Phillies signed 37-year-old utility man Juan Castro, owner of a sky-high .277 career OBP. The RHB can play third base, second base, shortstop, and left field. He is Eric Bruntlett's replacement, and, of course, all the fools will say "No one can be worse than Bruntlett!" They will be wrong.

Castro against RHP has a .266 OBP and a .342 SLG. Bruntlett has a .269/.292 line.
Castro against LHP has a .279 OBP and a .306 SLG. Bruntlett has a .352/.386 line.

No one can look at those numbers and argue that Castro is an offensive upgrade (except for Andy Martino, apparently). He is 37-years old. He has stolen 5 bases in the past 15 years. Bruntlett is 31-years old and has stolen 31 bases in the past 6 years. This is an offensive downgrade. On the defensive end, which is probably more important than offense for a utility man, Castro may be better than Bruntlett, but I have a hard time believing it's a significant difference given their ages.

Bruntlett was bad, but not against lefties.

Who will this Castro ever replace on defense?

I can not imagine him being a better outfielder than Francisco. He sure is not going to replace Utley or Rollins.
If Manuel didn't yank Howard late in 08, he sure as hell won't in '10.

what a joke.

I highly doubt this move was done to add a late inning defensive replacement. He is almost definitely here to spell Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins throughout the season.

Many people, including me, think the grind Chase Utley experiences throughout the season wears him down. He isn't getting any younger, and Jimmy Rollins is most likely experiencing the same thing. I agree with adding someone for this purpose, but this is clearly not the right man for the job.

yeah of course, however Bruntlett could have accomplished the same purpose.
