Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 154: Phillies lose in 9th (89-65)

The Phillies lost the third game of the 4 game set against the Brew Crew last night. Charlie Manuel's starting lineup appears that it might hold for the time being. Jayson Werth has been correctly batting 5th for some time now, and Ibanez remains 6th.

I can't say that I expect much from the Phillies when I see Kyle Kendrick and Jamie Moyer combine for 8 IP (4 each in this instance), but it really bothers me when Tyler Walker is used in a tie game in the 9th inning where there is a L/R/L lineup due up for the opposition. Even more so, Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder were due up 2nd and 3rd in the inning. Yes, Mr. Musser and I have been saying that Tyler Walker could be used as a closer, but I would still feel more safe with Ryan Madson appearing in that role with the heart of the lineup due up. It has always been my philosophy to have the Phillies best pitcher used as soon as possible in situations like this, because you can't just sit around and say, "well we need to save our 'closer' until we get the lead." Seems like a recipe for disaster to me, and tonight it proved true.

The Braves have now swept the Nationals, as the Phillies hold a 1 run lead in the 9th. I dont need a close race going down to the wire to end the season to be interested.
