Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 140: Phils blow late lead (80-60)

The Phils scored 8 unanswered runs after falling behind 4-0 in the first, but managed to let the lead slip away in the late innings. Moyer allowed 5 straight hits in the first inning that put his team in a 4 run hole. He settled down after the first, but still gave up 5 ER in 7 IP. Moyer shouldn't be allowed to start once Happ is declared healthy to pitch. Moyer almost lucked out and got the win today because the offense really came alive and finally mashed Pelfrey like they should (he is awful vs. LHB). However, after the time climbed back into the game, the bullpen couldn't hold the lead late.

I support all the moves Manuel made going with Myers in the 8th, and then using Chan Ho Park to relieve Myers (it was the bottom of the lineup). Madson just couldn't get the job done today. If Myers can get some work in as closer, I might be more interested in seeing him in this role. I think he has the insane mentality a closer needs to get up for the crucial situations closers usually find themselves in. Madson has the stuff, but some people think he might not have the mental makeup to be a closer. I find myself in that group occasionally despite the fact that I think it's ridiculous. I think a 1 run game in the 8th inning is just as nerve racking as a 1 run game in the 9th. People who think the last 3 outs of a game are the hardest to get are insane.
