The Phils beat the Braves tonight by a score of 3-2 to open up an 8-game divisional lead over both Atlanta and Florida. Joe Blanton pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball, and Brad Lidge pitched a perfect ninth inning to complete the victory.
Charlie Manuel did a very good job of managing tonight. His lineup was appropriate; but, more importantly, he yanked Ryan Madson from the game in the 8th inning after he allowed the first 3 batters to reach base. Madson allowed the Braves to cut the Phils' lead to 1-run, and with runners on first and second with nobody out, LHB Brian McCann was due up with LHB Garret Anderson on deck. Manuel has showed in the past that he likes to stick with his "8th inning-guy" in pretty much any situation as long as it's the 8th inning, but tonight he allowed LHP Scott Eyre to come in to face the two Braves' lefties. Eyre induced a double play groundball from McCann and an inning-ending groundout from Anderson. Lidge shut down the ninth, and the Phils held on for a 3-2 win. Good job by the manager tonight.
The Phils are off tomorrow. Tuesday night, they open a 3-game set at home versus San Francisco as LHP Cole Hamels faces LHP Jonathan Sanchez.
