Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Phillies sign Pedro

The Phillies signed Pedro today after he underwent a physical in Philly. They signed him for a base salary of $1 million plus $1.5 million in incentives. I see this as a low risk, high reward signing.

From 1994-2006, his highest WHIP was 1.171. His career WHIP is 1.051 which is seriously insane. However, he is older now, and he had two below average years in 07 and 08. He's going to need some time to get ready to start at the ML level, so it'll still be a while before we'll see him in CBP.

If he doesn't perform well, or if he's causing a problem in the clubhouse, the Phillies can simply let him go. I don't see him becoming a problem for the same reason why I felt anyone signing Gary Sheffield would be a smart move. He's old. He doesn't have many chances left. If he stirs the pot, and gets released, people may never sign him again. I've also heard that he's not even a jerk (like that) to begin with.

Keep in mind for the span of around a decade, he was one of the most dominant pitchers that Major League Baseball has ever seen. Even now, he has the experience and intelligence to slop 5-6 innings better than most young prospects that could be called up.

Please, please work.
