Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 63: Moyer continues to pitch his age (36-27)

Jamie Moyer allowed 6 runs in 6 innings tonight to raise his ERA to 6.35 and his WHIP to 1.53 on the season. Mr. Graham and I were strongly against the 2-year, 15-million dollar contract the Phillies offered to Moyer this past offseason, but we did not anticipate such a disappointing start to Moyer's year.

Therefore, with Chan Ho Park's early-season demotion and Brett Myers' injury, the Phillies will have a very difficult time clinching the NL East this season if Moyer continues at his current pace. Although he has pitched well the past 2 years, he is still a 47-year-old pitcher who will probably retire in 15 months. Moyer is not the only reason the Phillies lost tonight (1 run scored is obviously not enough), but his high WHIP is certainly cause for concern going forward. Ruben Amaro must find a starting pitcher to make sure Antonio Bastardo is not the Phillies' fourth-best starter.

No complaints for Manuel tonight (other than stacking the 3 lefties in a row, but we've been over this before), and the Phils will try to avoid a sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 pm when RHP Joe Blanton faces LHP Brad Mills.
