Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 44: Good job by Manuel, Lidge in win (25-19)

The only problem I had with Charlie Manuel tonight was the fact that he batted Jayson Werth 6th against LHP Andrew Miller. Werth demolishes lefties, and he should have been higher in the order despite his recent slump. Also, his placement in the 6th spot meant that the Phils had all lefties in the 3-4-5 spots, which is never a good thing because of late-inning situations where the opposing manager can use one pitcher to gain a matchup advantage over all 3 guys.

I normally would not approve of Ryan Madson's 8th inning appearance in a 5-0 game (especially since he has pitched in 3 of the past 4 days), but he had an off day yesterday and there is an off day on Thursday. The use of Scott Eyre was perfect: he only pitched to one batter, who was lefthanded.

Tonight's game was a big victory for the Phils as they remain in first place. Tomorrow night at 7:05 pm they go for their fourth consecutive series win when RHP Brett Myers faces RHP Burke Badenhop.
