Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 18: Manuel gets bailed out twice (10-8)

The Phils pulled off a weird win tonight. Very strange game all around. There were 234 HRs hit, including 2 grand slams and 2 upper deck shots. Neither of the grand slams were upper deck shots though. Manuel started Dobbs at 3rd. This was about the extent of the good moves by Charlie tonight.

Jack Taschner was brought into a 6-2 game to get out of the 5th inning. I don't ever want to see him in the game, but I guess if he has to pitch, then that was the time. It was also OK in my opinion to have him bat in the bottom of the 5th because Manuel was looking for a longterm solution. However, after Howard tied the game by hitting a grand slam, leaving Taschner in is pretty bad. Taschner inevitably got into trouble, and Charlie brought in Condrey to get out of a bases loaded jam. Woof. Condrey is not the Phillies best right handed option out of the bullpen. There is a .815 run expectancy for this base/out state. He gave up 1 run. Phils trail 7-6.

They tied it up in the bottom of the 6th. Top of the 8th score is still 7-7. Manuel has a chance to redeem himself, but uses Scott Eyre (?) to face the top of the Nationals' lineup. The batters in the top of the 8th were SLRL. Eyre's numbers vs. RHB are .368/.477 while Madson's numbers vs LHB are .350/.435. While these numbers are similar, Madson has performed better recently than the majority of his career. He has developed a 96 MPH fastball with a devastating changeup. I would take my chances with Madson against the heart of the Nats lineup. Eyre gave up 4 runs, but the Phils came back and saved Manuel again by scoring 6 (another non upper deck grand salami, this time by Ibanez). Madson closed it out. Phils win 13-11.
