Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 17: In first game this year they never trail, Phils sweep Fish (9-8)

The Phillies absolutely creamed the Marlins today, and Jamie Moyer pitched 6 strong innings to continue his domination of Florida. Charlie Manuel made no real mistakes today, and after a weekend sweep over a first-place team to pull the Phillies within 1.5 games of the top spot in the NL East, I certainly will not nit-pick any managerial moves.

That said, I thought it was strange to see Jimmy Rollins on the bench for the second straight Sunday. If the purpose was to give Eric Bruntlett some playing time, then he chose the right day: Bruntlett's .369 OBP vs. southpaws over the last three years makes him a more-than-proficient backup for Rollins when a lefty is on the mound (which was the case today). Next time he starts, though, I want Bruntlett to play third base in place of Pedro Feliz.

The Phils return home tomorrow to face the always-awful Nationals, and now that they are in second place: the pennant race has officially begun.

Those always-awful Nationals usually find a way to play the Phils pretty tough.
