Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Geoff Jenkins released by Phillies; Gary Sheffield released by Tigers

The Phillies have released outfielder Geoff Jenkins, who is coming off an unproductive 2008 in which he posted only a .301 OBP.

This opens up a roster spot for a bench player, and since the Phillies are in dire need of a right-handed bat for the bench, outfielder Gary Sheffield seems to be the logical option. He was released today by the Detroit Tigers and the Phillies are rumored to be interested.

Both outfielders are coming off relatively unproductive seasons. However, even if Sheffield were left-handed, he would be an obvious upgrade over Jenkins. It will be interesting to see if the Phillies sign Sheffield. If so, it will be certainly be an impressive turn of events by GM Ruben Amaro.

Goodbye, Geoff. We will not forget your leadoff double in the 6th inning of Game 5.

What do you think the chances are that the Phillies pick up Sheffield?

I'd say there's about a 20 percent chance they sign him...don't get your hopes up, Mr. Feeny.
