Charlie Manuel frequently makes poor strategic decisions. The 11-million dollar scoreboard in left field would probably do a similar job. We guarantee a post analyzing Manuel's decisions for every Phillies game. Please click on our aliases below to email us.

Game 122: Put this one in the win column for the Phightin' Phils (65-57)

Batrick had a home run tonight. That made up all of the scoring for both teams. The Phillies probably could have scored more if they hadn't danced with the devil in the top of the 8th. The Phillies had men on 1st and 2nd with no one out, Shane Victorino up, Utley on deck, Howard in the hole, and a lefty warming up in the bullpen. Even the Phils announcers knew what would happen if they bunted. Even if Shane had come through with a successful bunt, the lefty would have been brought in to face Utley and Howard. Shane victorino is most likely not going to be double up unless he hits the ball perfectly at the Padres. He bunted it hard back to the pitcher, who threw to third and got the lead runner Werth. No runs scored as a result.

Following the top half of the 8th, Manuel felt it necessary to remove Batrick (the power supply) from the lineup, and replace him with the pinch hitter from the 8th inning Werth. Perfect timing, because instead of Burrell leading off the 9th, the pitcher's spot was due up (Taguchi hit for Romero). It was all a wash tonight because Lidge managed to have a quick 9th.

Quick noted: upon So Taguchi entering the batters box Harry Kalas goes, "And now tahak. (long pause) So taguchi comes up to bat." Gotta love that HK, and I don't mean Harley Keiner.
